Jennifer L. Thompson Child Protection Attorney

JLT is Jennifer L. Thompson. Jennifer, a child protection attorney has represented individuals and county agencies in child protection since 2014. She also volunteered as a guardian ad litem and was trained in Ramsey and Hennepin Counties in the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) role. Jennifer has extensive training in all facets of child protection, including trauma-informed advocacy, Cornerhouse forensic interviewing, Appellate Practice, and Advanced Trial Advocacy. 

Jennifer is a member of the Children’s Justice Initiative in several Minnesota counties, past Chair and member of the Children & the Law Council of the Minnesota State Bar Association, and a former member of the Warren E. Burger, Inn of Court. Jennifer is a trained family mediator and a member of the National Association of Counsel for Children. She is Minnesota’s first and only current candidate for the American Bar Association’s Child Welfare Law Specialist certification. 

Among many other topics, Jennifer has trained on the following subjects important to families: Parental Alienation, Removal and Reunification, Working with Parents with Disabilities, Seeing Juveniles with Justice, the Family First Prevention Services Act, Juvenile Delinquency, Truancy, the 4th Amendment, Appeals of Determination of Maltreatment, Title IV-E (Foster Care), DHS Disqualification, Kids and Wellness, Police Reform, Rural Access to Justice, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). 

Jennifer has also moderated or taught continuing legal education classes, including “The Destructive Symbiosis between Child Protection, Juvenile Corrections, and Mental Health,” and a webinar on vicarious trauma for Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers. Jennifer was featured on the cover of the April 2021 Bench & Bar magazine with her article, “Competent but Compromised: Representing clients on the spectrum between mental health and mental illness.” 

When not advocating for other families, Jennifer enjoys time with her own family – fishing, gardening, and cooking at their home in central Minnesota.
