Fees and Payment

Up-Front Fees - District Court

Private Representation

Litigating a case at the district court level can last up to a year in child protection. If the case goes to trial, the time, effort, and skill required increase. Call JLT at (763) 310-7477 to inquire about the cost of private representation up to trial, and then through trial if necessary.

Low Bono

If you apply for a court-appointed attorney, then don’t qualify because you make too much money, but you can’t afford to hire one privately, JLT offers “low bono” options at the same discounted rate the counties pay. (Documentation of income and/or benefits is required.)

Court Appointment

JLT believes in access to justice. Apply to see if you qualify for court-appointed counsel in your county. If you qualify for a court-appointed attorney, it may be possible to substitute appointment of JLT in child protection or permanency cases, shifting the cost of representation to the county. Contact JLT for a consultation.

Flat Fees - Appeal

Private Appeal Representation

TPR/CHIPS

$7,500 through oral argument at Court of Appeals, including filing fee (subject to change as certain appellate rules are amended due to pandemic considerations).

Note: JLT is not taking Supreme Court cases at this time.

DHS/Maltreatment

$10,000 through evidentiary hearing at DHS; if the case requires further briefing or proceeds to district court appeal, separate fees will be negotiated.

Low Bono Appeal

Court Appointment
